With the proliferation of educational technology available today, coupled with the rapid rate of change in the edtech landscape, it is easy for teachers to feel that they have “missed the boat” when it comes to using technology in their classrooms. The focus of this workshop will be on discovering easy to use tools which develop students’ Listening and Speaking skills in foreign languages, and which allow students to use their language in a meaningful way. During the workshop, participants will use the tools presented to create teaching activities which facilitate richer and more engaging learning opportunities, and which were not previously possible without the use of technology.

This is a hands-on workshop, ideally suited to secondary teachers who want to make better use of technology to save time and increase student engagement, and participants will come away with a host of new ideas for activities as well as the teaching materials that they will develop during the day. Although the examples given in this workshop will come from French or English, the ideas presented are general in nature and can be applied in most Language classrooms, so teachers of all languages are encouraged to attend. 

Participants will need to bring a laptop in order to participate fully in the workshop.

About the Presenter:

Rowena Bata has been a Languages teacher for 25 years and she has worked at schools in Victoria as well as in France, Papua New Guinea and Malaysia. She has held various positions of leadership and has taught students of all ages, from Prep to adult. Rowena holds a Master’s degree in Linguistics and she is a Microsoft Innovative Educator Trainer. She is interested in bridging the gap between second language acquisition theory and what happens in a classroom, and she has a particular focus on the role that technology can play in the language learning process. Rowena has a wealth of experience that she brings to her presentations and her workshops are always practical and full of ideas for teachers to take away and use in their class immediately.
