We all want to imagine ourselves as expert teachers who can manage most classroom behaviours. We want to believe that we can have respectful relationships with students and that they are excited to come to class and behave in civil and productive ways. Some of us may view behaviour management as an “art form” rather than a “systematic process” that needs to be established, practised, and reviewed constantly.

How do the really good teachers make classroom management look effortless? What are the basics of most effective discipline systems? The key to any positive and engaging behaviour management system is that it must be “values” driven and have a “relational” focus to build a robust classroom community and to maximise academic outcomes.

This workshop will assist you to create and update your own classroom management model based on Positive Behaviour Development that includes the following topics -

  • Building a safe and sane classroom climate by being “fair” and “firm”
  • Teaching and developing discipline with less reliance on punishment
  • Establishing classroom rules and expectations
  • Addressing and responding to disengaged behaviours (anti social and inappropriate behaviours)
  • Promoting and encouraging engagement (more on task and work related behaviours)
  • Defusing and reducing conflict
  • Establishing professional teacher – student relationships
  • Sustaining and strengthening respectful classroom relationships
  • Repairing relationships when things go wrong

About the Presenter:

David Vinegrad is a well-known presenter with extensive experience in the area of behaviour management both nationally and internationally. He has highly developed skills as a facilitator, trainer, and presenter and is widely recognised as an international expert on restorative justice. He has played a major role in the introduction of restorative practices into schools in Australia and internationally and is an experienced counsellor and mediator including high level management of critical incidents and school based trauma. David has over 30 years of experience working with teachers and students in a variety of diverse educational settings undertaking and developing a wide range of roles including recent work in Japan and Brazil.
