In this 2 day intensive training course you will learn and develop a range of essential skills to better assist and effectively teach Primary and Lower Secondary students with Dyslexia. The course is also designed to address the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST) 1.5, 1.6 and 4.1 to help satisfy VITs request that teachers build their capacity to teach learners with disability (including students with dyslexia).

They are as follows:

  • Design and implement teaching activities that support the learning and participation of learners with disability, and address relevant policy and legislative requirements. (Standard descriptor 1.6)
  • Develop teaching activities that incorporate differentiated strategies to meet the specific learning needs of learners across the full range of abilities. (Standard descriptor 1.5)
  • Establish and implement inclusive and positive interactions to engage and support all learners in learning activities. (Standard descriptor 4.1)

Course Outline

Day 1

  • Dyslexia in a worldwide perspective
    - history
    - current Australian perspective
  • Neurological understanding of the condition
  • Impact of the condition across the lifetime and across generations
  • Identification
    - discernment from other conditions
  • Issues in Primary Schools
    - sufficient immersion for remediation
  • Interventions:
    - Treatment, Remediation,
    Modification, Accommodation

Day 2

  • Assistive technologies
  • Case history discussions (If possible, bring own examples of cases)
  • Fostering dyslexic strengths
  • Developing learning plans
  • Modifying tasks and curriculum

About the Presenter

Leonie Hehir is a Psychologist with over 10 years' experience in schools working with children with learning difficulties. As a researcher and mother of a dyslexic child, she has been at the forefront of research into the diagnosis and remediation of challenges which impact on children from all levels of intelligence. She is passionate about introducing new teaching styles and techniques which take advantage of visual and sensory learning strategies. She has also written a book on a visually based spelling technique.
