The world of fractions influences aspects of place value in number, location in geometry, measurement relationships, probability and time.
Fraction ideas are closely linked to division. In the early years the action of constructing fractions should be linked to fraction symbols. Older students need to practise ideas associated with the whole and the idea that the whole keeps changing. Many students from Year 4 onwards have problems with equivalence which is linked to their understanding of the times tables and factors. The action of constructing any fractions ideas should be linked to relationships within the fraction area. This flexibility in fractional thinking extends to link with decimals and percentage.
These prerequisite are required to be developed before advancement in maths can be made. Come along and see strategies that work and returned to school armed with some activities to improve the overall outcomes for all of your students.
